Decks, Porches & Fences

Soft boards, wobbly railings, rotten stair treads, leaning posts and sagging gates put back into safe, solid shape.

Weather is hard on decks here

Humid summers and freeze-thaw cycles work on fasteners and end grain. What starts as one soft board near a post becomes a spongy spot underfoot, then a railing you do not trust. Catching it at the board stage is the difference between a repair and a rebuild, and it usually gives you a couple of years of warning.

Decks and porches

Board replacement in wood or composite, railing and post connections, stair treads and stringers, porch flooring and skirting. Fasteners get upgraded while we are in there. The original nails on a twenty-year-old deck are usually the reason the boards are lifting, and structural screws hold where nails have given up.

Deck framing that has gone bad structurally is a bigger project than a repair. If that is what we find, you will hear it plainly rather than after the invoice.

Railings, steps and handrails

The two things that get checked on any railing are how the post is fixed to the rim joist and whether the handrail is graspable and continuous. Both are safety items, and both are the sort of thing that gets flagged in a home inspection when you come to sell.

Fences and gates

Gates sag because the post moved, the hinge screws pulled out, or the frame racked out of square. Each has a different fix, and re-hanging a gate without addressing the cause just buys a few months. Posts that have rotted at ground level get reset or replaced, and panels and pickets get swapped where they have gone.

Getting a price

Photos work well for decks: one wide shot showing the whole structure, one close on the damage, and one of the underside if you can get it. That is usually enough for a number without a visit.

Decks & Fences we have done

Deck landing and stairs from above, before and after. Left: weathered, split and cupped pressure-treated boards with plant pots on them. Right: new grey composite decking and stair treads over the same structure.

Weathered pressure-treated boards swapped for composite over framing that was still sound. The structure stayed, the surface did not.

Rear deck stairs and the space beneath the deck, before and after. Left: weathered bare-wood stair railings and a strip of dirt under the deck. Right: the stair and deck railings finished in white, with a paver patio laid across the dirt.

Stair and deck railings brought back to a clean white finish, and the dead strip of dirt under the deck turned into a paver patio.

Frequently asked

Can you replace just the bad boards?

Usually yes. We swap the failed boards and fasteners and leave the sound structure alone. If the framing underneath is compromised, we will show you the problem before quoting anything larger. You should see what we are seeing.

My railing moves when I lean on it. Is that a repair or a rebuild?

Most wobble comes from the post connection at the rim joist rather than the rail itself, and that is a repair. A loose guardrail is a safety issue rather than a cosmetic one, so it is worth doing before somebody puts their weight on it.

Can you swap wood boards for composite?

Yes, where the framing is sound and the joist spacing suits the board you have chosen. Composite is less forgiving than wood about span, so the framing gets checked before anything is ordered.

Do you stain or seal afterward?

New pressure-treated boards need to weather before they will take a finish, usually a few months. We can come back and seal the deck once they are ready rather than putting a coating on wood that will reject it.
