Light Fixtures, Fans & Faucets in Wendell, NC

Fitting a garbage disposal is a twenty-minute job with one detail that catches people out every time: the dishwasher inlet on a new unit is blocked by a plug that has to be knocked out first.

The plug that floods a kitchen

Wendell has an intact old town centre and a large planned development beside it, and in both the most common under-sink job is a garbage disposal — replacing a failed one or fitting one where there was none.

It is a short job. It also has one step that, if missed, produces a flooded kitchen on the first dishwasher cycle.

New disposals ship with the dishwasher inlet blocked by a moulded knockout plug.

The reason is sensible: not every installation connects a dishwasher to the disposal. Some kitchens drain the dishwasher separately, so the manufacturer supplies the unit with that inlet sealed and leaves it to the installer to open if needed.

If the dishwasher hose gets connected to an inlet that is still plugged, the dishwasher pumps its waste water into a dead end. It backs up, and it comes out wherever it can.

Doing it properly

Knock the plug out before the unit is mounted. With the disposal on the bench, not fitted upside down under a sink.

Retrieve the plug. Knocking it through drops it into the grinding chamber. Left there it rattles around and can damage the unit or jam it. It comes out and goes in the bin.

Check the hose run. A dishwasher drain hose should have a high loop or an air gap depending on the arrangement, so waste water cannot siphon back into the machine.

That is the whole of it, and it takes an extra minute done in the right order.

The other disposal variables

Mounting systems differ between manufacturers. The sink flange assembly — the ring that clamps into the sink opening and that the disposal twists onto — is not universal. A like-for-like swap within a brand is quick; a change of brand may mean replacing the flange assembly in the sink as well, which means the sink drain comes apart.

Weight and support. Larger units are heavy, and the sink flange plus the discharge tube carries all of it. Worth checking the sink and the existing arrangement can take a bigger unit if you are upgrading.

The electrical side. Where a unit plugs into an existing switched receptacle under the sink, swapping it is our work. Where it is hard-wired, or where there is no supply at all, that is a licensed electrician job and we will say so before starting rather than partway through.

Where we stop: altering the waste plumbing, adding a supply that does not exist, and anything requiring a permit.

The rest of what happens under a sink

Since the cabinet is already open, the things worth doing at the same time:

Isolation valves. The small shut-offs on the supply lines. In a Wendell Falls house of fifteen years they have never been turned, and the first operation frequently ends with a valve that seizes or will not seal. They get tested before anything is dismantled.

Supply lines. Replaced as standard when a faucet is changed. Inexpensive, and a braided line letting go under a sink is an expensive event.

Trap and tailpiece. Frequently the source of a slow drip that has been blamed on the faucet.

Faucet. Check the hole configuration in the sink before buying — one, three and four hole arrangements are all common and a faucet made for one may not suit another.

Downtown Wendell

The older streets are a different proposition. Under-sink plumbing in an older house may be a mix of ages and materials, valves may be very old indeed, and the waste arrangement may have been altered more than once.

Everything gets looked at before it is taken apart, and where a connection needs soldering or altering, that goes to a licensed plumber.

Older ceiling boxes in those houses may have no grounding conductor, and insulation near a fitting that ran hot for decades can be brittle. Both get assessed before anything is committed. Original light fittings there are frequently worth rewiring rather than replacing — the body is usually sound and what has failed is the flex and the lampholder inside it.

Fixtures and fans

Ceiling fans. The universal rule: a fan cannot hang from an ordinary light box. It is several times heavier than a light fitting and it vibrates continuously, so it needs a box rated for fan support — screwed directly to a joist or carried on a brace bar between joists. Retrofit braces fit through the existing hole without opening the ceiling.

Downrod length from the ceiling height rather than from whatever came in the box. Blade balance done properly with the supplied kit, which is why some fans are silent and others rattle.

Builder flush mounts in Wendell Falls, ready to be replaced. Quick, cheap, and one of the fastest ways to make a house look less like a spec build.

Exterior fittings need the right rating for their position — damp for genuinely covered spots, wet for anything exposed. The usual failure is the photocell rather than the fitting, and on many fixtures it is a separate replaceable part.

Distance

Wendell is around forty-five minutes from us, the outer edge of what we cover. No travel surcharge, and a single item at that distance is not good value for you.

Fixture and plumbing work batches well — most of the time on any one item is getting set up and getting under a cabinet. Send the whole list.

Getting a price

Photograph under the sink including the valves, the trap and the existing disposal if there is one, and tell us the make of the unit you are replacing and the one you are buying. That decides whether the flange comes out too.

New disposals ship with the dishwasher inlet plugged

There is a knockout plug moulded into the dishwasher inlet on a new unit, because not every installation uses it. Fit the unit without removing it and the dishwasher has nowhere to drain, which floods on the first cycle.

The plug has to come out and be retrieved

Knocking it through drops it inside the grinding chamber. If it is left in there it will rattle around and can damage the unit, so it gets taken out before the disposal is mounted.

Mounting rings are not universal between brands

Different manufacturers use different mounting systems, so a like-for-like swap within a brand is quick and a change of brand may mean replacing the sink flange assembly too.

Fixtures in Wendell — questions

Our dishwasher flooded after a new disposal went in. What happened?

Almost certainly the knockout plug. New disposals come with the dishwasher inlet blocked off, because plenty of installations do not connect a dishwasher to them. If that plug is not removed, the dishwasher drain hose has nowhere to discharge and the water backs up. It is the single most common disposal installation mistake and it is entirely avoidable.

Is swapping a disposal a straightforward job?

Usually yes, and the main variable is the mounting system. Manufacturers use different sink flange assemblies, so swapping like for like within a brand is quick, while changing brand can mean replacing the flange in the sink too. Tell us what you have and what you are buying and we will tell you which it is.

What about the electrical side?

Where the unit plugs into an existing switched receptacle under the sink, that is a straightforward swap and it is our work. Where it is hard-wired, or where there is no supply at all because the previous sink had no disposal, that becomes a licensed electrician job and we will say so before starting.
