Light Fixtures, Fans & Faucets in Clayton, NC
Under-cabinet lighting does more for a kitchen than any other fitting in the house, because it is the only light that puts illumination on the worktop rather than on your own shadow.
The only light that helps you cook
Clayton has grown as fast as anywhere in the state and the developments east and south of town are largely new, which means a great many modern kitchens with the same lighting arrangement: recessed downlights in the ceiling, and nothing else.
That arrangement has a flaw that people live with without identifying.
Every ceiling fitting in a kitchen is behind you when you stand at the counter. So the light comes over your shoulder, your body blocks it, and you chop vegetables in your own shadow. It does not matter how many downlights there are or how bright they are — adding more of them adds more light to the top of your head.
Under-cabinet lighting is the only fitting that puts light where the work happens. It is genuinely the highest-value lighting change in most houses, and it is a modest job.
Getting it right
Position
At the front edge of the cabinet underside, not tucked against the wall at the back.
At the back, the fitting lights the backsplash and the reflected glare comes straight back at standing eye height, particularly off a gloss tile or a polished stone. It also leaves the front of the worktop — where you actually work — in relative shadow.
At the front, light falls onto the worktop, and the fitting itself is hidden from view by the cabinet edge. A small trim or shadow rail improves that further.
Type
Continuous strip gives even light with no scalloping. Individual puck fittings give pools of light with dark gaps between them, which looks decorative and works less well.
Diffused rather than bare emitters. Under a gloss worktop or a stone with any reflectivity, bare emitters produce a row of visible dots reflected back at you.
Colour temperature
Match it to the rest of the kitchen. The thing that looks wrong is a cool strip under the cabinets and a warm fitting overhead, or vice versa — the mismatch is obvious whenever both are on.
Most kitchens sit comfortably in a warm to neutral white. Worth deciding once and applying to everything.
Dimming
Worth having if the kitchen is open to a living space, since full-brightness task lighting in the background of an evening is not what anybody wants. The driver and the control have to be compatible, which is a specification question rather than an installation one.
Where the power comes from
This is what decides how big the job is.
Low-voltage strip needs a driver — a small power supply — and the driver needs a supply and somewhere to live where it is accessible and ventilated.
The easy case: there is a receptacle inside a cabinet, or one nearby that can be reached without opening walls, and you are content with the lighting switched at that point or by a switch fitted into the run. That is our work.
The harder case: you want it switched from the wall alongside the other kitchen lights, or there is no supply within reach. That means new wiring, which is a licensed electrician job.
We establish which one you have before starting rather than partway through, and we will tell you plainly.
Routing the cable matters too. It runs behind the backsplash where possible, through the back of cabinets, or in a small trim — not looped visibly under the cabinets, which is what gives a retrofit away.
The rest of the kitchen
Faucet replacement. Common alongside lighting, and the job is rarely the faucet — it is what is under the sink. Isolation valves that have never been turned frequently seize or fail to seal the first time, so they get tested before anything is dismantled. New supply lines go on as standard.
Check the hole configuration before buying. Kitchen sinks have one, three or four holes and a faucet designed for one arrangement may not suit another.
Elsewhere in the house
Builder flush mounts ready to be replaced, which is quick and one of the fastest ways to make a house look less like a spec build.
Ceiling fans. The rule that always applies: a fan cannot hang from an ordinary light box. Several times the weight of a light fitting and vibrating continuously, so it needs a box rated for fan support — screwed to a joist or on a brace bar between joists. Retrofit braces go through the existing hole.
Downrod length from the ceiling height, blade balance done properly with the supplied kit.
Exterior fittings. On open Johnston County lots there is a lot of sun and no shade, which is hard on finishes and on plastic lenses. Fittings need the right rating for their position — damp for genuinely covered, wet for anything exposed — and the usual failure is the photocell rather than the fitting, which on many fixtures is a separate replaceable part.
Screened porch fittings need to suit a space that is effectively outdoors, whatever the roof over it suggests.
Downtown Clayton
The older streets near the town centre are a different age of house. Older ceiling boxes may have no grounding conductor, and insulation near a fitting that ran hot for decades can be brittle. Both get assessed before anything is committed, and original fittings there are frequently worth rewiring rather than replacing.
Where we stop
Ours: swapping fixtures on the same circuit, fitting under-cabinet lighting where a supply is available without new wiring, faucets, valves, traps and supply lines.
Not ours: new circuits, running new wiring to a switch position, panel work, moved plumbing, and anything requiring a permit.
Getting a price
For under-cabinet lighting, photograph the run of cabinets and the inside of the cabinet nearest a possible supply — and tell us whether there is a receptacle in any of them. That is what decides the job.
Clayton is about forty minutes from us, with no travel surcharge.
Ceiling lights put your shadow on the worktop
Every overhead fitting in a kitchen is behind you when you stand at the counter, so you work in your own shadow. Under-cabinet lighting is the only fitting that solves that, which is why it changes a kitchen more than replacing the ceiling light does.
Where the driver and the switch go decides the job
Low-voltage strip needs a driver somewhere accessible, and the run has to reach a supply. In newer Clayton kitchens there is frequently a receptacle inside a cabinet that makes that easy; where there is not, the job changes.
Position the light at the front of the cabinet, not the back
Mounted at the back, the fitting lights the backsplash and reflects into your eyes. Mounted toward the front edge, it puts light on the worktop where the work happens.
Fixtures in Clayton — questions
Does under-cabinet lighting need new wiring?
It depends where the supply comes from. If there is a receptacle inside a cabinet or nearby that can feed the driver, and you are happy with a switch at that point, it can often be done without new wiring. If you want it switched from the wall alongside the other lights, that generally means a licensed electrician, and we will tell you which applies before starting.
Where exactly should the strip go?
Toward the front edge of the underside of the cabinet, not tucked at the back. At the back it lights the backsplash and reflects glare into your eyes at standing height. At the front it throws light down onto the worktop where you are actually working, and a small trim or shadow rail hides the fitting from view.
What colour temperature works in a kitchen?
Match it to the rest of the kitchen lighting or the difference is obvious every time both are on. Most people are happiest around a warm to neutral white for a kitchen — cooler than a living room, warmer than a garage. What looks wrong is a cool strip under the cabinets and a warm fitting overhead.
