Interior & Exterior Painting in Wendell, NC

Faded shutters and a tired front door make a house look older than it is, and both are small enough to fix in a day. In Wendell that is the most common exterior job we do.

The two things people actually look at

Wendell has an intact old town centre and a large planned development beside it in Wendell Falls, and the most requested exterior work in both is the same and it is small: shutters and the front door.

There is a good reason. Nobody stands across the street and evaluates your siding. What registers, from a car or from the pavement, is the door and the shutters — and when those have gone chalky and pale the whole house reads as neglected even when the siding is fine.

It is also a job that fits in a day or two, which makes it the cheapest visible improvement available.

Vinyl shutters

Most of the shutters in the newer half of Wendell are vinyl, and the thing worth knowing is that the colour fails long before the material does.

A shutter that has gone from black to a chalky purple-grey is usually still structurally fine — not brittle, not cracked, not warped. It just looks finished.

Doing them properly

Take them off the house. This is the part people want to skip and it is the part that decides the result:

  • Edges. In place you cannot paint the edges, so they stay the old colour and show from any angle other than dead on.
  • Bridging. Paint applied around a shutter in place runs into the gap between it and the siding and effectively glues it to the wall. The next person to take it down tears the siding.
  • Overspray. You either mask the surrounding siding extensively or accept paint on it. Masking properly takes longer than removing the shutter.

Off the house, on trestles, both faces and all edges, is faster and better.

Wash off the chalk. Faded vinyl has a layer of degraded surface material on it. Paint applied over that bonds to the chalk rather than to the shutter.

Prime with something that bonds to plastic. Not a general-purpose primer. This is the step that decides whether the paint is still on in five years.

Then finish. A product suited to exterior plastic, and — this matters on vinyl — within the heat limits, because a very dark colour on a shutter in full sun can distort it.

Wood shutters downtown

The older streets are a different decision.

Sound wood shutters are worth repairing and repainting. Original shutters were sized to the windows they sit beside, and modern replacements frequently are not — a shutter that is obviously narrower than half the window is a detail that makes a house look wrong in a way people notice without identifying.

Split, warped or rotten ones are usually worth replacing. We will tell you which you have rather than putting three days of filling into something that has failed.

Either way they come off the house to be worked on, and the hardware — hinges, holdbacks, any original ironwork — is worth keeping.

Front doors

Worth doing at the same time and worth doing properly, because a door gets touched every day.

Hardware comes off rather than getting masked. Handles, knockers, letter plates, escutcheons. Masking around them always shows, and taking them off takes ten minutes.

Light sanding and a proper clean. Doors collect a film of everything, and the area around the handle collects more of it.

A finish that can take being handled. A door is not a wall, and a flat finish on one is a mistake within a month.

Consider the exposure. A south or west-facing door in full sun will fade a deep colour faster than a sheltered one. That is a pigment property rather than a paint quality issue, and it is worth knowing before choosing rather than after.

The rest of the exterior

Where the whole house is being done, the older streets and Wendell Falls need different things.

Wendell Falls houses are mostly on their original builder coating, so the first repaint is the simplest one they will get. The value is in the caulk joints, which go first and which are the actual route water takes, and in washing off the chalk so the new coat bonds to the house.

Downtown Wendell houses carry more coats of more ages, and the failing layer is not always the top one. Anything lifting comes back to a sound edge and gets feathered. Original trim profiles are not sold and get repaired rather than replaced. Where the house predates 1978 there is a lead question, and it is a preparation question: intact paint is not the hazard, making dust out of it is.

Interiors

Wendell Falls was handed over in a very flat builder paint that marks easily and burnishes the moment anyone wipes it — moving to a washable matt or eggshell is the most useful change.

The older houses need matching rather than covering, and plaster walls show every repair that was not primed to even out the porosity.

Distance

Wendell is around forty-five minutes from us, the outer edge of our area. There is no travel surcharge. Shutters and a door on their own are a short job at that distance, so it is worth attaching the rest of the list to the same visit — we will be straight with you about whether a single item is worth the trip.

Getting a price

Photograph the front of the house from across the street, plus a close-up of one shutter and one of the door. Tell us whether the shutters are vinyl or wood — a photo of an edge answers it.

Vinyl shutters that have faded are usually still sound

The colour goes long before the material does. Vinyl shutters take paint well once they have been taken off the house, washed properly and primed with something formulated to bond to plastic.

They have to come off the house to be done properly

Painting shutters in place gives you overspray or brush marks on the siding, unpainted edges where the shutter meets the wall, and paint bridging the gap so the shutter is effectively glued on. Off, on trestles, both faces and all edges.

Downtown Wendell has real wood shutters, which is a different decision

Wood shutters that are split, warped or rotten are generally worth replacing rather than painting. Sound ones are worth repairing and repainting, because a modern replacement rarely matches the proportions of the originals.

Painting in Wendell — questions

Our shutters have gone chalky and pale. Do we need new ones?

Usually not. Vinyl loses its colour long before it loses its integrity, and faded shutters that are not cracked or brittle take paint well. They come down, get washed properly to remove the chalk, get a primer formulated to bond to plastic, and then a finish coat. It is a day of work and it changes the front of the house.

Can you paint them without taking them down?

We would rather not, and the reasons are practical. In place you cannot reach the edges, so they stay the old colour and show. Paint bridges the gap between shutter and siding, so the shutter is effectively stuck to the wall. And you either mask the siding extensively or accept overspray on it. Taking them off is quicker than doing all that.

What about the front door — can that be done at the same time?

Yes, and it is worth doing together because they are the two things people actually look at. A door needs the hardware removed rather than masked, light sanding, and a finish that will take being touched every day. Where a door faces full sun a deep colour will fade faster, which is worth knowing before choosing.

How to get a price
