Furniture Assembly & Storage in Holly Springs, NC

Overhead garage racks are the best use of space in a new house and the fixing that gets the least thought. What they hang from is a roof truss, and a truss is a designed system rather than a convenient piece of timber.

What a garage ceiling actually is

Holly Springs expanded quickly and most of its housing is recent, which means garages built the way garages are built now: a concrete slab, framed walls, and a ceiling carried on engineered roof trusses.

That last part matters for overhead storage, and it is the part nobody thinks about when they buy a rack.

A truss is not a joist. A joist is a beam — a piece of timber sized to carry a load across a span. A truss is a designed assembly: top chords, a bottom chord, and web members joined at the nodes, engineered as a complete system where every member is doing a specific job in tension or compression.

Which produces three rules.

1. Load is limited and it is spread

The bottom chord of a roof truss is sized for the ceiling it carries plus a defined allowance for storage. That allowance is real but it is not generous, and it assumes load spread across the structure rather than concentrated at one point.

So a rack gets fixed across several trusses rather than hung off one, and the honest advice on what goes up there is: bulky and light. Seasonal decorations, luggage, camping gear, empty containers. Not tile, not paint, not tools, not anything you would struggle to lift over your head — those belong on wall shelving or on the floor.

Staying well inside the rack manufacturer rating is the practical version of this.

2. Nothing gets cut, notched or drilled through

This is not a judgement call. Cutting or notching a truss member, or drilling through a chord, compromises an engineered assembly in ways that are not obvious from the ground.

Racks fix to the underside of the bottom chord with fasteners of the appropriate type and length. Where a rack design requires anything beyond that, we will tell you rather than doing it.

3. Position matters

Near the supports is stiffer than mid-span. Where there is a choice, the rack goes where the structure is happiest, and where headroom and the garage door track allow.

Garage door clearance is the other positional constraint and it catches people out. An overhead door and its track need their swing space, and a rack that fouls it is a rack that has to come down.

Wall shelving, which is where the heavy things go

Simpler and more useful than people expect.

It fixes into framing. In a garage that is frequently straightforward because the wall may be unfinished and the studs visible. Where it is finished, the studs get located properly.

It carries far more than overhead racking because the load path is short and direct.

So put the heavy things here. Paint, tools, hardware, anything dense.

Freestanding racking

Garage floors slope toward the door by design, so a freestanding unit stands leaning unless its feet are packed. That is a few minutes with shims and it stops the unit rocking and the shelves running out of level.

Anchoring the top to the wall is worth doing on anything tall, for the same reason tall furniture indoors gets strapped.

Indoors

The rest of this service in a house of this age is straightforward:

Wardrobes, bookcases and chests of drawers. Built in the room they will stand in, because a built carcass has corners that mark casings and carrying one round a turn twists it and loosens every joint.

Anti-tip fixings into framing, not into the plastic plug supplied in the box. That plug holds a picture; it does not hold a loaded wardrobe beginning to fall. Where the item does not line up with a stud, a batten between two studs gives the strap something structural.

Closet systems. Builder wire shelving is fixed with plastic anchors into drywall and deflects under real weight. Replacing it with shelving on cleats fixed into framing gives you something that holds what you put on it.

The back panel matters on any carcass. It is what makes the unit square and rigid, and it is the component most often fitted carelessly.

Being close

Holly Springs is about ten minutes from our base, so a single wardrobe or one set of garage shelves is a sensible booking here. There is no travel time built into the price.

Getting a price

For overhead storage, photograph the garage ceiling and tell us whether it is finished or open, and what you intend to store. For furniture, model names or links plus which rooms they are going in.

Newer garages are ceilinged over roof trusses

Recent construction uses engineered trusses rather than traditional rafters and joists. They are efficient and they are designed as complete assemblies, which changes how anything hung from them has to be treated.

Where and how much you hang matters

A truss bottom chord is sized for the ceiling and for a defined storage allowance, and load is meant to be spread rather than concentrated at one point. That decides both the position and the total weight.

Nothing gets cut, notched or drilled through a truss member

Cutting or notching a truss member compromises the whole assembly. Racks fix to the underside of the bottom chord with appropriate fasteners, and where a rack requires anything more than that we will say so.

Assembly & Storage in Holly Springs — questions

Can we hang overhead storage in our garage?

In most cases yes, and it is worth doing properly. The rack fixes to the underside of the truss bottom chords with fasteners rated for the load, spread across several trusses rather than concentrated on one. What we will not do is cut, notch or drill through a truss member — that compromises an engineered assembly and it is not a judgement call.

How much can we put up there?

Less than most people assume, and it depends on the structure. The honest answer is to stay well within the rack manufacturer rating, spread the load across the rack rather than piling it at one end, and put the heaviest things on the floor or on wall shelving instead. Overhead is for bulky and light — seasonal decorations, luggage, camping gear.

What if the garage ceiling is not finished?

That makes it easier, because the trusses are visible and there is no guessing about where the chords are. Where a ceiling is drywalled, the truss positions get located properly before anything is fixed.

How to get a price

  1. 01

    Fill in the form

A sentence about the job and the address we would be coming to. Rough measurements help but are not essential — the address is the part we cannot work without.

Most jobs are priced from the form without anyone driving out. Bigger projects get a short visit first, and the estimate is free either way.

  3. 03

    Pick a time

The price is agreed before any work starts. We work 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, and take urgent jobs when we can.
